India’s hospitality sector was thriving before the pandemic, attracting both foreign and domestic travelers. However, the industry now faces challenges such as regulatory complications, limited infrastructure, high taxation rates, environmental concerns, and a shortage of trained labor. The pandemic worsened these issues, leading to a substantial skills gap as many missed out on crucial training and work experience.
Addressing the Skills Gap
To tackle these challenges, ITC Hotels and CII partnered with EHL to launch the VET by EHL Professional Diploma Programs. These apprenticeship programs are designed for individuals with a high school diploma and are already making significant strides in bridging the skills gap. The 18-month training program includes courses in Culinary, Food & Beverage Service, and Rooms Program, following stringent quality assurance standards.
Developing Successful In-House Training
The VET by EHL programs combine online or in-person courses with hands-on experience in real-world settings. Students apply classroom knowledge directly to their work in hotels and restaurants, guided by experienced professionals. This approach ensures they are well-prepared for the industry's demands.
The Future of VET by EHL in India
By the end of 2023, it is estimated that 500 students will be enrolled in ITC’s VET by EHL professional hospitality diploma program. These students will gain technical and soft skills through simulations and real-world interactions, building a pipeline of exceptionally qualified hospitality workers.
The VET by EHL program represents a significant innovation in hospitality education in India, providing structured, industry-aligned training to bridge the skills gap. This initiative benefits students and contributes to the growth and quality of India’s hospitality sector. For those in the hospitality industry, the VET by EHL programs offer a pathway to overcoming the skills gap and ensuring a bright future for the sector.
